I hated science as a kid and as a teenager. I'm a practical person: WHY do I need to know the structure of a cell if I have no desire to be a doctor?? I hate bugs...why do I need to know the anatomy of one? Birds are pretty...but I don't necessarily get a thrill from knowing which is which. I know a cardinal from a blue jay and a crow from a hummingbird. Isn't that enough?! Don't even get me started on mechanical science… you won't see me dissecting an engine anytime soon.
But now, as an adult, a parent, a teacher, and a child of God, I am realizing something I never did as a youth.
My husband, my kids, and my friends all love showing me their latest projects. The Lego creations, the drawings, the church plans, the room remodels, the works of crocheted art. They want me to take time to notice their hard work, the details they added, the creativity they invested. They feel loved when I take time to inspect and praise their handiwork. If I find enough value in their work to be able to USE their creation, they are even MORE proud!
This is a small part of what the study of Science does. We get to study God's handiwork. Inspect and admire His detailed creation. Praise His orderliness and stand in awe of His creativity. Science classes should be a praise and worship service every school day. How great is our God! How unsearchable are His riches!
The makeup of a cell? Genius, Lord!
The differences between birds? How creative! The benefits & dangers of certain bugs and insects? That could save me a lot of itching or provide me something tasty like honey! The science that was used to develop engines that harness energy? I love my automated appliances that were invented through this type of science, and thank the Lord for them daily.
No matter what grade we are in...no matter how old we are, we will never mine the depths or heights of His creation. I doubt we will ever truly know all we can accomplish by researching and applying the scientific truth our Creator has set in motion. But He wants us to take time to notice His creation...His attention to detail. The usefulness of what He has built.
When your child comes home this semester with a science study sheet...Maybe show them how their lives benefit from somebody taking the time to learn about these types of science. And take it as an opportunity to brag on God with them a bit.
And who knows...maybe you'll want to dig back into science a little yourself to remind yourself of His power and wisdom...and "sing the mighty power of God!”
